聽( tīng)|World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, we’d like to help you answering this question:

The wisdom in traditional Chinese Character 聽(tīng, 听in simplified) teaches us the exact way to show up for them. To put our ears first, give full focus, meet their eyes, and hold their pain sincerely in our hearts.

First, 耳, the ear, paired with 王, king. This radical pair tells us: the ear must be king of this moment. When someone shares suicidal pain, speaking does not get to take over. Your ear, your ability to receive their pain, come first. Do not interrupt, do not jump to give solutions.
Next, 十 on top of 目. Shi fen means 100% form the idea of 十分注目. Eye contact. Maintain eye contact, gentle and natural. you dont need to stare, nor you look away because you become impatient.
Next 一心. It means to listen and see with an open heart. This is difficult because it requires you to feel their pain. That takes courage! it encourages you to fully hear and see a person on a deep level, all their hidden vulnerabilities, their quiet pain, and the quiet strengths they barely show. You hold space for every part of who they are without judgement, with understanding.
That’s the answer to “how do I best support someone who is at suicide risks”. For anyone carrying suicidal thoughts, shame and loneliness weigh heavier than anything. They do not need you to fix their problems instantly. They need to feel seen, fully heard, uncrushed, and accepted.

If you are at risk of suicide, or support others with suicide risks, please know that there are support available in both Chinese and English in Beijing, and China. Always remember, you are not alone. Please visit our Get Help page for more info.
