This is a CandleX community project.

Since CandleX was founded in 2015, we have seen members of Beijing community within our Mental Health Peer Support group in intimate violent relationships struggle to access help. Our peer‑support groups offered support for this group of people. In 2021, psychotherapist/counsellor Xiaojie Qin co‑launched ProjectA with Megan Purvis from the United States, providing group and individual counselling for people who have left abusive intimate relationships. Built upon community financial support, service fee concessions and reduced‑fee client participation, the project created an affordable service pathway to accompany people impacted by relational harm through inner adjustment.

For our past work on intimate‑partner abuse, please refer to:

In terms of grief and loss, unexpected deaths have occurred within Beijing’s international community. Death and separation are universal human experiences. Our corresponding support work was launched in 2024 with a limited number of service spots available each year. Over years of practice, we have accompanied many community members through difficult life phases and hope to keep offering this form of mental‑health support to the community, including family members bereaved by suicide, young adults mourning the passing of grandparents, and teengers coping with the death of parents.

After years of intermittent practice, we continue to observe steady community demand for these two types of services. As a result, individual counselling for grief and loss, and individual counselling for survivors post‑abusive relationships are now long-term rolling reduced‑fee programmes, delivered by psychotherapist Xiaojie Qin.
